What Does Gray Look Like On Walls?

Behind Unseen Prat Pier

and Amanda Cerny Paulina Pizarro

"Prat Pier was not bigger? What happened here? Why place such an important tourist and historical Valparaiso is in such poor conditions? Is not it dangerous to be so? Who is responsible for that has not done anything yet? How much will this affect workers at the site? "It has become common to see so few people in this sector before yesterday was so busy? Are not you supposed to Valparaiso is known for its culture of Buenos Aires and the pier is one of their representatives? Is not part of the Historic Pier Valparaiso? And the City, why not in charge? ...

Every time we walk in Valparaiso is impossible not to get to Muelle Prat, in one way or another we always end up happening here, and if not, we cry all the way back. The boats are simply "boat" is a synonym of Valparaiso, call us to see and enjoy what we deliver. The pier and everything around you is part of the Jewel of the Pacific, a place that conveys the history, customs and above all welcome to feel part of the Buenos Aires culture, even for a moment. In this ethnography intend to approach this place so to know from the inside, feel the point of view of those who do story and share his world participant.

History

El Muelle Prat was founded in the eighteenth century as a arrival
people and cargo from large ships to shore. Named after the commander of the corvette Esmeralda, Don Arturo Prat Chacón, it was to this place where his remains arrived during the Pacific War. A few meters from the Plaza Sotomayor, where they were buried the remains of our heroes, will find this beautiful place that has become a historical icon, cultural, heritage and tourism in Valparaiso. Over time it has earned a place in the hearts of the locals, to be as representative of what is his hometown, as well as being a meeting place for Chileans and foreigners. Given the degree of importance it represents to the city port, in 2003, when Valparaiso received the title of World Heritage City, it is enclosed within the old quarter of the Jewel of the Pacific, becoming not only important for Chile but also for the world.
In the spring, in the heart of it, is a magnet that grabs all the attention: the tourist boats, which offer a glimpse of the rainbow of colors from the sea. The origin of these vessels is almost as old as the origin of the pier, and that initially served as a means of transportation that connected the ship to port. However, today its main task is to give the chance to take a look at Valparaiso peculiar way. Initially
spring property belonged to the Chilean government, however, the January 31, 1998 passed into the hands of the Chilean consortium, Germany, Port of Valparaiso, who takes over the place until today.

is where the problems begin ...

Imam

The "magnet" that calls for the spring visit is organized to provide good care and keep living. This organization is based on the existence of two agencies: Boat Owners Association of Muelle Prat and National Inter-Union Workers Prat Pier for boats. The latter nation in 1984 as a mediator and advocate of workers in boats to the owners thereof, by way of solving existing conflicts. However, later they were faced with a larger problem. When EPV became property of the pier, workers in this, particularly those in the boats, were attacked constantly, and holding a key point in the strategy to increase the profits of the port. Although there are two organizations that represent the boaters, both working together against a larger enemy.

Earthquake

For boaters, the harbor is more than a source of work is place, your home, so started a battle against the EPV, in favor of remaining in that sector, Defence and sense of belonging identity feelings toward it.
Faced with reprisals by the company to drive the boatmen of the place is that the boaters were involved in a string of conflicts. On the one hand, seeks to increase profits EPV directory on the other boaters want to keep their place in the spring and thereby keep alive one of the greatest traditions in Buenos Aires. In the interest of defense, the union and the association have searched multiple outputs enabling them to occupy their rightful place in the spring until today.

Intangible Heritage of Humanity

On July 2, one of the come out as more important to have followed the boatmen came to life: the appointment of the boats and Intangible Heritage of Humanity , by adding them to the project "Old Port" which seeks to preserve in good condition those tangible or intangible property that provide the basis to Valparaiso still considered a World Heritage City. This appointment was a major step in the struggle of boaters to the EPV, as this ensures a place in the Prat Pier can not be revoked by the authority of the port, as an entity now than it protects.
Having been involved in this achievement and have seen fighting during research time make it have a special meaning that may have to be simple external controls, for we own the fight to have been in constant contact Don Carlos Lemus, president of the union of boaters, and the atmosphere surrounding the pier. During these three months we witnessed the change in the prevailing feelings since we got the place until we saw how to achieve a goal. It has been gratifying to feel that "hicismos history " When we ride by boat and sign the registration book, to which all present (including the authorities) had access, so as to leave an imprint on the history of the Prat Pier.

Monument
The next ambition is to reach boaters plan to get the title of a historic monument, because once the EPV accomplished this goal can not dock them aside, and would gain weight with the authorities in general, a weight that transcends economic power of the enterprise: a historical and cultural weight that is gained through years of experiences and contributions to the traditions of a culture. Moreover, if this can be achieved, the authorities responsible for the amnteción and persistence over time of these.

With this the boats will gain greater importance and would be seen as "walking history" : Looking to the past while in the present ...

modernization Is justification for the loss of traditions in Buenos Aires, who fall victim to capitalism in the hands of big business?

In today's society all around us is constantly changing: the cell phone today is the latest generation in less than a month will be obsolete, the latest model computer will soon scrap today it is possible to create stem cells artificially ... Y so, the case with most things. Our world runs at high speed towards achieving significant progress in improving the quality of life and welfare of the people, but if we let this process invades all areas of our reality we may lose our identity. Preserving tradition has become more difficult than the day before yesterday, as the inexhaustible desire to destroy everything that progress does not cooperate with their interests. Three decades ago it was normal to celebrate Christmas with the family celebrating the birth of Jesus and family togetherness, forgetting somewhat from the gifts and emphasizing the feeling of love that is generated. Today, consumerism and Christmas is equivalent to most children do not associate this date with unity and love, but with gifts. Here we show that the fast pace of modern life leaves little room to keep to tradition: the wasting away of a bit and replaced by technology and money.
accompanied modernization of capitalism, as it gains power as the modernization is gaining ground: a specialized industry, working in different areas to increase productivity, to do this also increase the profits and the owner can get rich, born in the latter "a love of money" that will support the modernization pro-feed their selfish feeling. The lust to have more the other brand even further the gap between social classes: some are enriched at the expense of the impoverishment of others. For this to make money, big companies ignore the traditions and customs of the place which is located in your area of expertise, not caring to bypass as long as they achieve their purpose. In this framework gives the struggle of the inhabitants of the Muelle Prat, who want to preserve their traditions and identity, dealing with capitalism and modernization, which are materialized by the Port of Valparaiso. The EPV rid of them in order to unify their domains in the port of Valparaiso and increase their profits, however, if they do this would destroy part History of Chile and part of Buenos Aires culture, so the unions that make up the spring are at war against the oppression. To demonstrate this struggle, we have focused our sights on the speedboat, which have a more difficult and direct confrontation to the EPV, compared with the other participants of the problem, that they are the only ones who do not have insurance and a permanent physical rather than the sea. It is worth mentioning that while boaters are divided into two groups: the National Inter-Union Workers Prat Pier Boats and Boat Owners Association of Muelle Prat, both work for the same reason, however, our informant key belongs to the first.
Prat Pier is a tourist spot and one of the World Heritage Site, so its importance is not less, since they contribute to the Jewel of the Pacific a historical and cultural legacy that support this status. However, only the land area of the pier falls into this category, leaving disadvantaged and drift boaters, those having no support of this style are constantly attacked by the EPV, as these do not generate "profits "to have them at the dock. Year after year, various "inconveniences" in the speedboat courtesy of the company, which strives to get them out of place. These "head pain" have been that the union be revived after almost ten years of inactivity to fight injustices, protecting the rights of its members and taking the fight to retain their achieve home and source of work. Although the problems faced are varied over time, the background is always the same. This year came a new problem: after the earthquake in February, the pier was badly damaged, what infrastructure will not only affected but also to workers in the spring. Only in the case of the boaters, boat trips decreased drastically, which was caused by a decline in visitors to the area, this because about 65% building was damaged, reducing the physical size of the place and thus safety. The EPV and the Government are the ones to ensure the maintenance of the place, however, with the change of command decision deferred until six months, of which so far have trasncurrido about three. The port in no hurry to change the situation, because they are not affected, but the boaters and local people themselves. Have demanded a quick solution, but not listen to them and tempt them to abandon it is better to stay, but boaters are not asking for money or anything that they do not appropriate, only asking for decent conditions for work so we can take the bread every day home.

Something that stands out among all, hope, tenacity and perseverance of the boatmen no limits: God never closes a door without opening a window , so searched and searched the "window "and gave a great solution. Thanks to the advice of Mr. Milos Miskovik, director of the Department of Tourist Development and the support of the Municipality of Valparaiso, have been able to Project "Vieux Port" , with which he recognized as Intangible Heritage of humanity to the boats, the EPV can not move them from their current location. This has been a big step for boaters, which shows that the one who perseveres reaches. By the time the boaters have won a battle for the Buenos Aires culture, proving that modernization and the thirst for money is not too strong justification to overturn a tradition.
